    The Chicago River is like no other. Lake Michigan (just the Lake to the locals) was once the emptying destination for the famed waterway. But ever since 1900, the river has emptied into the Mississippi River instead. Sewage travels along the rivers currents and Chicago was not about to let that mess empty into their beloved lake. They engineered a reversal of the river’s flow known as the largest public earthmoving project. Now it is the only river in the world that flows backward.
